On 13th March, 9 teams from 7 schools all over Sherborne took part in a Y3/4 football tournament at Sherborne Abbey Primary school. They were split into 3 groups of 3. Group A consisted of Sherborne Abbey A, Bradford Abbas and Sherborne County B. Group B consisted of Sherborne County A, St Andrews Yetminster and Buckland Newton. Group C consisted of Thornford, Trent Youngs and Sherborne Abbey B. Group A was very tightly contested with Sherborne Abbey A and Bradford Abbas battling out at the top, but eventually the Group was won by Sherborne Abbey A by one point.
Group B was also tightly contested between Sherborne County A and St Andrews Yetminster. The group was won by Yetminster on goal difference, but Sherborne County A also ended up progressing to the semifinals as the best runner up. The moment of the tournament came when a Buckland Newton player said to a referee ‘we haven’t managed to score all afternoon but I’m having a great time.’ This sums up the spirit of the tournament and the kids having fun.
Group C was more one sided with Trent Youngs winning all 4 of their group games to progress to the semifinals as Group C winners.
In the semifinals, Yetminster came out on top against Trent Young’s, but the Sherborne derby between Abbey A and County A went all the way to penalties. Both teams missed their first penalty’s but Abbey scored their 2nd penalty while County missed theirs to give Abbey the advantage. Both teams missed their 3rd penalty’s, therefore Abbey went through to the final to play Yetminster.
The final was a very close contest. Abbey took the lead in the 4th minute, but Yetminster equalised on the stroke of half time. The game looked like it was heading to extra time but Yetminster scored the winning goal with 30 seconds left to win the final 2-1.
A very big well done to all the teams that took part, especially to Yetminster for winning the tournament.
